A World of Science in a Grain of Sand

Mrs. Brown’s 7th grade science students traded textbooks for microscopes and became sand detectives! Students examined sand samples from beaches across the world, including Hawaii, Cozumel, Gulf Shores, and more, analyzing grain size, shape, color, and composition to uncover clues about where each sample came from and the forces that shaped it.

From tiny grains to big ideas, students were observing, comparing patterns, gathering evidence, and making scientific inferences about real-world Earth processes. Who knew a handful of sand could tell the story of a beach thousands of miles away?
