Bio

Welcome to 7th Grade Life Science and Medical Detectives!  My name is Dr. Lori Shrode and I am so excited to begin my first full year teaching at Liberty Middle School.   I grew up in Decatur, Alabama in a family of farmers.  In high school, I played several sports including volleyball, softball, cross country, and track.  After finishing high school at Decatur High School, I followed my father’s footsteps to Auburn University where I completed a B. S. in Molecular Biology.  After graduation, I was fortunate to obtain a one year internship with Monsanto’s plant biotechnology group in St. Louis, Missouri.   My time at Monsanto convinced me to pursue a graduate degree in genetics.  I moved to Texas A&M University where I studied asexual development in fungi.  After completing my doctoral degree, I moved to the University of Florida where I teamed up with Monsanto again, this time to work on drought resistance in cotton.

My life took a turn after the birth of my two children, Riley and Madeline.  My focus shifted to teaching them and the next generation to love science and the world around them.  Last fall, I completed my student teaching at Liberty and James Clemens and was thrilled to be hired on in March as a new member of the faculty.

When I am not in the classroom or on the field, I love spending time with my husband, Tim, my children, and our English lab, Hadley.  I enjoy traveling, theater, reading, and sports (especially Auburn football).  My favorite trip (so far) was a trip to Peru where I saw pink river dolphins in the Amazon River, terrace farming in the Sacred Valley, and hiked through the ruins of Machu Picchu.

I look forward to a great year at Liberty Middle School.  If there is anything I can do to make your time here a little easier, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
