Bio

Welcome to 7th Grade Life Science and Medical Detectives!  My name is Dr. Lori Shrode and I am so excited to begin my first full year teaching at Liberty Middle School.   I grew up in Decatur, Alabama and graduated from Decatur High School.   In high school, I played several sports including volleyball, softball, cross country, and track.

After finishing high school at Decatur High School, I followed my father’s footsteps to Auburn University.  At Auburn, I had the priviledge of competing on the Auburn Track and Field team for two years.  My focus shifted my last two years of school when I found a love for bioengineering and genetics.   After graduation, I was fortunate to obtain a one year internship with Monsanto’s plant biotechnology group in St. Louis, Missouri.   My time at Monsanto convinced me to pursue a graduate degree in genetics.

Texas A&M University became my new home where I studied asexual development in Neurospora crassa.  I loved my time at Texas A&M because it allowed my to grow as a scientist, publish in peer reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and meet some of the pioneers in genetics including Frances Crick, Kary Mullis, and Francis Collins. After completing my doctoral degree, I moved to the University of Florida, where I teamed up with Monsanto to work on drought resistance in cotton.

My goal in the science classroom is to share my love for science with every student who enters the classroom.  Liberty has also given me the opportunity to coach our student athletes who play volleyball and softball.  When I am not in the classroom or on the field/court, I love spending time with my husband, our children, and our English lab, Hadley.  I enjoy traveling, theater, reading, and sports (especially Auburn football).  My favorite trip (so far) was a trip to Peru where I saw pink river dolphins in the Amazon River, terrace farming in the Sacred Valley, and hiked through the ruins of Machu Picchu.

I look forward to a great year at Liberty Middle School.  If there is anything I can do to make your time here a little easier, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
